Florida just redrew the battlefield for U.S. Congress — and it’s a nightmare scenario for Democrats.
The Florida Legislature approved a new congressional map pushed by Gov. Ron DeSantis, reshaping all 28 seats in the state’s U.S. House delegation.
And the shift is massive.
Before (U.S. House seats): Republicans: 20 Democrats: 8
New map (projected): Republicans: 24 Democrats: 4
That’s a potential four-seat pickup for the GOP — in one of the most important states in the country.
The move is part of a broader national redistricting push tied to allies of Donald Trump ahead of the midterms, as both parties fight for control of the House.
DeSantis’ map doesn’t just adjust boundaries — it wipes out several Democrat-leaning districts across Central and South Florida. That leaves deep-blue pockets like Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, and West Palm Beach as isolated strongholds in an increasingly red map.
DeSantis says it’s about fairness.
“Florida got shortchanged in the 2020 Census,” he argued, pointing to population growth and a roughly 1.5 million-voter Republican edge.
The plan also eliminates race-based districting — a controversial move the governor says aligns with the Constitution.
The timing raised eyebrows. The same day the map passed, the U.S. Supreme Court rolled back a key provision of the Voting Rights Act — potentially making it harder to challenge maps that weaken minority voting power.
Top Republicans, including House Speaker Mike Johnson, are backing the strategy.
But lawsuits are almost guaranteed. Florida’s constitution bans maps drawn for partisan gain — and critics say this one goes too far.
Bottom line: If it survives court challenges, this redraw could cement Republican dominance in Florida’s U.S. House seats — and tilt the balance of power in Washington.
