Trump Orders Emergency TSA Funding as Airport Lines Spiral

America’s airports are buckling under the pressure — and President Donald Trump says he’s stepping in.

With the Department of Homeland Security shutdown dragging into its sixth week, more than 60,000 Transportation Security Administration employees are working without pay — including roughly 50,000 frontline officers screening passengers nationwide.

The result? A system on the brink.

Nearly 500 TSA officers have already walked off the job, while thousands more are calling out sick at record levels. At some airports, security lines are stretching past three hours, turning routine travel into a full-blown nightmare — and raising fresh concerns about safety gaps.

In a sharply worded memo, Trump blasted congressional Democrats for what he called a “reckless” shutdown, accusing them of putting politics ahead of national security.

Now, he says he’s done waiting.

Declaring the situation a national emergency, Trump ordered DHS officials and budget authorities to find existing funds to pay TSA workers the wages and benefits they’ve missed — even as the broader shutdown drags on.

“These officers are protecting the public without knowing if they can pay rent or feed their families,” the president said, signaling urgency to stabilize a workforce he called critical to national security.

The directive allows officials to shift funds tied to TSA operations to cover paychecks — a temporary fix until Congress restores full funding.

Bottom line: As Washington gridlock deepens, the administration is scrambling to keep airport security from unraveling — and to get thousands of unpaid workers back on the payroll before the travel system grinds to a halt.
